Ryokan Guide

How to Book a Ryokan

Finding and booking the perfect ryokan, simplified for international travelers.

The Challenge

Why Booking a Ryokan Can Be Difficult

Unlike hotels, ryokans weren't designed with international travelers in mind. Here's what makes it tricky — and how we help.

Language barrier

Many ryokan websites are entirely in Japanese. Even when translated, key details about onsen rules, meal options, and guest policies are often lost.

Our approach: We present every property in clear English with the details that matter most to international guests.

Too many options

Japan has over 40,000 ryokans. Most booking sites lump them in with hotels, making it nearly impossible to compare traditional properties side by side.

Our approach: We focus exclusively on ryokans — curated, categorized, and filterable by what actually matters: onsen type, meals, price, and location.

Hidden surprises

Tattoo bans, cash-only policies, no-children rules, strict check-in times. These details are often buried in Japanese fine print.

Our approach: Our listings surface these details upfront, so there are no surprises on arrival.

Uncertain quality

Reviews on general travel sites are sparse for ryokans, and it's hard to gauge the quality of a traditional inn using hotel-style star ratings.

Our approach: Every ryokan we list is handpicked. We include real photos, highlight what makes each property special, and organize by region so you can compare.

Book in 4 Simple Steps

01

Choose Your Region

Japan has hundreds of onsen towns, each with a distinct character. Hakone for easy access from Tokyo. Kinosaki for charming canal-side streets. Beppu for powerful volcanic springs. Kyoto for culture and cuisine. Start by deciding what kind of experience you want.

Find the Right Ryokan

This is where most travelers struggle. Ryokan websites are often Japanese-only, and it's hard to tell which welcome foreign guests, have English-speaking staff, or accommodate dietary needs. That's exactly why we built this site — every ryokan in our collection is vetted for international travelers, with details on onsen type, meal options, price range, and accessibility.

Communicate Your Needs

After booking, contact the ryokan about dietary restrictions, arrival time, tattoo concerns, or room preferences. Most properties respond within 24 hours. The more you share in advance, the better your experience — Japanese hospitality thrives on anticipation.

After Booking

What to Communicate to Your Ryokan

Your booking is confirmed — now make it perfect. Contact the ryokan about these details through the booking platform's messaging system.

Dietary restrictions

Kaiseki relies heavily on seafood and dashi. Communicate vegetarian, vegan, halal, or allergy needs clearly — most ryokans accommodate with advance notice.

Arrival time

Check-in is typically 3:00-5:00 PM. Dinner is served at a fixed time (usually 6:00-7:00 PM), so late arrivals risk missing the meal.

Tattoo policy

Many onsen traditionally prohibit visible tattoos. If you have tattoos, confirm the policy and ask about private bath options.

Room preference

Private onsen rooms (rotenburo-tsuki) are worth the upgrade. Specify garden view, higher floor, or accessible room if needed.

Transportation

Many ryokans offer free shuttle service from the nearest station — but only if you reserve in advance.

Payment

Booking online means your payment is handled. But bring cash for on-site extras like drinks, spa treatments, or gift shop purchases.
