Kinugawa Onsen is a hot-spring resort town strung along the Kinugawa River gorge in Nikko City, Tochigi — about two hours north of Tokyo and a short hop from Nikko's shrines and Tobu World Square. Discovered in the Edo period and long a getaway for Nikko's temple priests, it grew into one of the Kanto region's largest onsen towns, lined with big riverside onsen hotels alongside a handful of refined ryokan. Its alkaline simple-spring water is gentle and clear, and many baths — from rooftop sky gardens to riverbed rock pools — look straight out over the gorge. The quieter neighbouring Kawaji Onsen, a few minutes upriver, adds a more traditional, rustic counterpoint.
