Nine hot springs strung along the Yokoyu River in the Nagano mountains, about two and a half hours from Tokyo. Shibu Onsen is the atmospheric core: a stone-paved lane of wooden inns where overnight guests are lent a master key to nine small public bathhouses that day visitors cannot enter. Above the valley sits Jigokudani Monkey Park, where wild Japanese macaques bathe in a hot spring — mainly between December and March, and never on a schedule.
