Luxury in Nikko means nature at close range: inns set along the Kinugawa gorge or up in Okunikko's national-park forest, an hour or so beyond the World Heritage shrines. Our database lists 11 luxury Nikko stays, from $142 a night. Okunikko Yuno-mori (9.6, $264) and Hotel Hana-An (9.6, $247) lead the ratings, with Bettei Sasane ($350) for detached-room seclusion. October and November foliage transforms the area — and the booking calendar; reserve those weeks by late summer. Outside autumn, this is one of the easier high-end onsen regions to book, and winter snow soaks are genuinely underrated.
