The most reliable viewing window is the first three weeks of February. Access is via the Zao Ropeway from the village base; many ryokans run a free shuttle to the ropeway, and the resort hosts evening light-up tours December through February when the frosted trees are illuminated.

From Tokyo, take the Yamagata Shinkansen to Yamagata Station (~2h45m), then a 40-minute bus or taxi up the mountain to Zao Onsen village. From Sendai, the most common route is a direct express bus (~80 minutes) that crosses the Zao mountains via the Echo Line — scenic in autumn and operationally limited in deep winter.
