The ryokan brochure says "15 minutes from the station" and means by the inn's shuttle, which runs twice in the afternoon and needs a phone call in Japanese. For rail-pass travelers that is the single most common friction of a ryokan night. We kept properties at ten minutes or less, with at least 50 reviews, and one per area so the list covers seven different destinations rather than seven inns on the same street. Walking time is a walking time — hills, cobbles and bridges add minutes with luggage, and the notes say where.
