The easiest way to predict how a ryokan stay will feel is not the star rating; it is the room count. Under ten rooms, fewer guests share the bath, and dinner is cooked for a handful of people rather than a hall. Booking sites do not let you filter for it. Our database does, and this guide is six of those results, spread across regions and prices, with the room counts taken from the row.

Scale, mostly. With four or six rooms there are only a handful of other guests to share the baths and the dining room with, and some small properties skip communal baths entirely in favour of a bath per villa. Yamaichi Bekkan is recorded as family-run; Koyado En is the opposite model, an adults-only auberge. The trade-off is inventory — few rooms means fast sell-outs — and, sometimes, English. Koyado En (Kinosaki) is an eight-room adults-only (13+) auberge in Kinosaki that opened in 2013 as a deliberate counter-proposal to the big-ryokan format: a Tajima-beef course dinner built on fewer, higher-grade preparations, an afternoon happy hour, and private hot-spring baths that tattooed guests may use. Oyado Yukizumi (Kusatsu) is a seven-room modern ryokan a minute from Kusatsu's bus terminal, opened in 2017, with kakenagashi water drawn directly from the Yubatake source — it topped a 2025 survey of Kusatsu inns by Google review score. Oyado Uchiyama (Izu) is six detached villas in Izu-Kogen, each with its own open-air onsen and sea-and-mountain views, with kaiseki at dinner — privacy is built in, and the six-villa scale suits couples who want quiet. English is limited. Rates start from about $538 per night.

Yamaichi Bekkan (Miyajima) is a four-room family-run kappo ryokan on Miyajima island, steps from the ferry terminal and a short walk from the floating torii, where the focus falls on the kitchen — a multi-course menu built around Seto Inland Sea seafood, oysters and anago.
