Naruko Onsen-kyō is one of only a few places in Japan with nine of the country’s eleven recognized spring types available within walking distance of each other — sulfur, sodium-bicarbonate (“beauty water”), alkaline “unagi-yu,” acidic, and more. Several ryokans operate their own private source springs, and the famous Naruko Hotel’s bath water visibly changes color across the day as mineral content shifts.

Naruko Onsen is roughly 75 minutes from Sendai Station via the JR Rikuu-East Line, with most express trains running 2-3 times per day directly to Naruko-Onsen Station. By car it’s about 90 minutes on the Tohoku Expressway via Furukawa. The 5 spring districts (Naruko, Higashi-Naruko, Kawatabi, Nakayamadaira, Onikobe) are linked by local rail and bus.
