Search "ryokan with private onsen" and the results are villas at $400 and up, which teaches people that a private soak is a luxury purchase. It is not, necessarily. Japanese ryokans have offered kashikiri — a private bath you reserve for a slot — for as long as they have had baths, and at plenty of mid-range and budget properties it is free. The cheap mechanism is the kashikiri bath: one or more private bathrooms the property keeps for reservations, usually in 40–60 minute slots, sometimes free and sometimes a few thousand yen. You get the door locked and the water to yourself; what you do not get is a bath in your room, and you are on a schedule. Suehiroya Ryokan (Kusatsu) completed a full renovation in 2022 and sits two minutes from the Yubatake with just seven rooms — and four private kashikiri baths, all supplied with genuine Yubatake sulfur water and available around the clock at no extra charge, which is an unusual combination at this price. Ryokan Yumotoso (Kurokawa) has received guests for 170 years on the river in Kurokawa, and its three private baths — an outdoor rotenburo, a stone-walled indoor bath and a hinoki cypress bath — rotate on a first-come basis at no extra charge, with no slot to book and no fee. Atatakai Yado Taniya (Dogo) takes only six groups of guests a day in the Dogo Onsen district and runs three private hot-spring baths on free-flowing water that you reserve for your own use, with Seto Inland Sea cuisine at dinner and the historic Dogo Onsen Honkan a walk away. Tattoos are allowed. English is limited. Rates start from about $180 per night.

Ryokan Kounoyu (Kurokawa) is the one in-room option at this price: nine detached cottages in Kurokawa, each with its own kakenagashi open-air bath fed by continuously flowing source water, plus a shared standing bath 1.62 metres deep.
