Sansou Murata's twelve rooms and Tamanoyu's seventeen cottages routinely sell out in their booking window.

For mid-tier picks like Hanayoshi, Sansuikan, and Itsuki, four to six weeks is enough except during peak weeks.

The official ryokan websites are usually the cheapest direct option and give you access to room types not always shown on aggregators (Sansou Murata's "Hagi" and "Yamabuki" cottages, for example, are only bookable through the official site). Ikyu, Rakuten Travel Japan, and JTB Japanican are reliable English-language alternatives with the same inventory at near-parity pricing. Booking.com and Agoda will sometimes show better cancellation terms but slightly worse prices.

Three things make a real difference:

1. A Mt Yufu-facing room, by name. "Yufudake-side" or "fudake mukai" is the phrase. At Sansuikan, Hanayoshi, KAI, and Sansou Murata, this changes the stay. 2. Dinner timing. 玉ノ湯は、山荘無量塔と並ぶ由布院ハイエンド旅館のもう1つの柱です。1953年に金鱗湖から1キロメートル弱の3万平方メートルの森に開業し、わずか17棟の離れ、ライブラリー、静かなプール、そして地域屈指の名声を誇るレストランを擁しています。

夕暮れの庭を散策することこそが、ここの真髄です。苔むした小道に並ぶ石灯籠、ほぼ鳥のさえずりだけのサウンドスケープ、ホテルのスイートというよりも作家のアトリエに近い雰囲気の客室。各離れには玉ノ湯の自家源泉から引かれた檜の内湯があり、半露天の庭園風呂を備えた棟もあります。

1921年創業の亀の井別荘は、由布院で最も歴史のある本格的な旅館であり、ほかの宿が密かに目標とする存在でもあります。3万3千平方メートルの敷地は町の東端、金鱗湖のほとりに広がり、客室は本館の洋室スイートと和の離れ（はなれ）を合わせて21室です。

意図的に追求された美学は、古き良き日本そのものです。深みのある木材、キリム織りの絨毯、ヴィンテージの建具。山荘無量塔ほどインスタ映えを意識しておらず、より大人びた佇まいです。私は2026年2月にここで夕食をいただきました。豊後牛のしゃぶしゃぶに自家採取の野菜を添えた一皿を、こたつで足を温めながら低い座卓でいただきました。これは九州で味わった最高の伝統懐石として、今も私の中で揺るぎない一席を占めています。

界 由布院は、星野リゾートの由布院進出として2022年夏に開業し、隈研吾氏が設計を手掛けました。駅から車で12分の丘陵地に位置し、現役の棚田を見下ろし、その先には由布岳がそびえ立ちます。客室数は45室と旅館にしては大規模ですが、低層の木造パビリオンが斜面に沿って配置され、全体のボリュームを巧みに分散させています。

このリストの中で、山と棚田の眺望が最も澄み切って見えるのはこの宿です。稲のサイクルが手前の景色を変えていきます。5月には鮮やかな緑、8月下旬には黄金色、初夏には水鏡のように水を張った田んぼ。共用湯殿は敷地内の最も低い場所にあり、棚田越しに山々を望めます。

樹は、実用的なラグジュアリーを体現する選択肢です。20棟の離れにはそれぞれ温泉風呂が2つ（檜の内湯1つ、石造りの露天風呂1つ）あり、金鱗湖から徒歩約10分の敷地に点在しています。デザインはアンティーク調ではなく現代的で、Aフレームの木造屋根、打ちっぱなしのコンクリート、北欧の風合いが感じられます。離れは2泊の滞在でも十分機能する広さで、寝室とは別にリビングスペースが備わっています。

私は宿泊経験はありませんが、別の取材のため2026年2月に「スタンダードA」の離れを案内していただきました。建築の質は中堅クラスの由布院旅館より明らかに高く、スタッフの英語対応も実用レベル、朝食もアメリカンスタイル（島内のレストラン「と和蔵」にて）で、3日連続の和朝食という流れを心地よく崩してくれます。

山水館は、初めての由布院旅行を一般的な予算で楽しむ友人にお薦めしている宿です。JR由布院駅から徒歩8分、本リストの中で最速のアクセスです。上層階の2つの共用露天風呂からは、由布岳の双耳峰をほぼ正面から望めます。複数の客室も山に直接面していますが、リクエストする必要があります。

建物は1990年代半ばのものでその面影が一部に残っており（ロビーはデザイン旅館というよりも一般的なリゾートホテルの趣きです）、骨格は確かで価格は誠実です。共用湯殿が主役で、広く清潔で、山に向かってラウンジチェアが並びます。私は2026年1月の朝、雪化粧の山々を見ながらここで湯に浸かりました。あの時、これ以上ないほどぴったりの場所だと感じたものです。

建物はハイエンドの選択肢に比べてより一般的で、「快適なビジネス旅館」と呼ぶのが近い佇まいですが、すべてが滞りなく機能します。スタッフの英語は基本レベルですが、懐石メニューには翻訳が用意されています。10月から3月にかけて、宿の下方の田んぼから立ち昇る朝霧は、本当に美しい景色です。

山荘無量塔、玉ノ湯、亀の井別荘の場合、現実的な予約リードタイムは週末で3〜4ヶ月前、休暇シーズン（ゴールデンウィーク、8月中旬のお盆、年末年始）では6ヶ月前が目安となります。山荘無量塔の12室と玉ノ湯の17棟は、予約開始時刻に合わせて常時満室となります。

花由、山水館、樹といったミドルレンジの旅館の場合、繁忙期を除けば4〜6週間前で十分です。

旅館の公式サイトは通常、最も安価な予約手段であり、予約サイトには表示されない部屋タイプ（山荘無量塔の「萩」「山吹」コテージなどは公式サイトからしか予約できません）にもアクセスできます。一休、楽天トラベル、JTB Japanicanは英語対応の信頼できる代替先で、ほぼ同じ在庫をほぼ同等の料金でご提供しています。Booking.comとAgodaは、キャンセル条件が良いケースもありますが、料金はやや高めの傾向にあります。

3つのポイントが大きな違いを生みます。

1. 由布岳側の客室を、明確にリクエストすること。「由布岳側」または「岳向かい」と伝えてください。山水館、花由、界、山荘無量塔では、これによって滞在の質が大きく変わります。 2. 夕食の時間。多くの旅館では、お客様のお部屋または個室の食事処で午後6時または7時に懐石をご用意します。日没時に湯の坪街道を散策されたい場合は、遅い時間帯をリクエストしてください。 3. 駅からのお迎え。多くの旅館では、由布院駅到着時にお電話いただければ無料で送迎していただけます。予約時に明示しておけば、向こうもこちらの到着を見越して準備してくれます。

日本の旅館のキャンセルポリシーは、欧米のホテルより厳しめです。標準的な流れは、7日前に30％、3日前に50％、1日前に80％、当日100％の請求となります。返金不可プランを予約される前に、ご旅程に柔軟性を持たせておきましょう。

1泊は、午後3時頃のチェックイン、湯浴み、夕食、朝食、午前11時のチェックアウトという流れで、初めての方が体験を満喫するのに適しています。山を望み、美味しい食事をいただき、目抜き通りを散策できます。

2泊は、由布院までわざわざ訪れる価値を最大限に活かせる過ごし方です。2日目には、金鱗湖でのゆったりとした朝（冬は午前8時前の朝霧が見どころ）、体力に余裕のある方は午後の由布岳登山（烏帽子岳ルートで上りに約3時間）、そして山水館と玉ノ湯のように2軒に分けて連泊すれば、2夜連続で異なる旅館の夕食を楽しめます。私が日本国外からのお客様におすすめしている構成は、まさにこの形です。1泊目は手頃で町の中心の宿、2泊目はデザイン重視のゆったりとした宿、という流れです。

英語対応にはばらつきがあります。山荘無量塔、玉ノ湯、界 由布院は流暢なスタッフが在籍しています。亀の井別荘は実用レベル。花由と山水館は翻訳アプリに頼ることになりますが、印刷されたメニューは二か国語表記で、チェックインの流れもよく整備されています。

もし1回の由布院旅行と1つの予算が与えられたら、私は2泊を分けて、1泊目を由布院 山水館（手頃で、山を望む共用湯殿、徒歩圏内）に、2泊目を山荘無量塔（由布院を地図に載せた古民家モダンの旅館）にします。実用的な体験から没入的な体験へという流れが、私が何度も戻ってきたくなるこの町の真の姿です。

1泊だけ選ぶとしたら、棚田の眺望を理由に界 由布院を選びますが、湯の坪街道への徒歩アクセスを諦めることになるという点はご承知おきください。

由布院は、ほかの温泉地以上に、数時間の事前計画で旅の質が大きく変わる町です。眺望の良いお部屋を選び、大分で本当に育ったものをいただき、朝食前に湖を一周してください。それが、本当の意味での由布院の旅であり、本記事の由布院のおすすめ旅館リストを、忘れられない滞在のために活用していただく方法でもあります。
