Nasu is a highland onsen region at the foot of Mount Chausu in northern Tochigi, about 70 minutes from Tokyo by shinkansen to Nasushiobara. It gathers three distinct hot-spring areas: Nasu Yumoto, the historic core fed by the milky sulphur "Shika-no-yu" spring used for some 1,300 years; the Nasu Highlands (Nasu Kogen), a forested plateau of design inns and small onsen scattered near the Nasu Imperial Villa; and quiet Itamuro, an art-and-recuperation spring town on the Naka River.
