Arima has been a bathing destination for around 1,400 years and sits 30 minutes from Kobe, which is both its appeal and its problem: the town is compact and the communal baths at the big inns are shared with everyone else who came for the same water. A private bath is the way to have that water to yourself — and Arima's water makes it worth it, because the amber kinsen and the clear ginsen are Arima's own.
This guide is only about private onsen. For the whole inventory, dining and access, see our complete Arima Onsen ryokan guide; to weigh Arima against its Kansai rival, see Arima vs Kinosaki.
Private onsen in Arima: gold, silver, and what "private" means here
Two waters, one town. Kinsen, the gold spring, is iron-rich and salty, and it turns amber-brown on contact with air; it is the water most of Arima's private baths use. Ginsen, the silver spring, is clear and carbonated. Only one pick in this guide — Taketoritei Maruyama — offers a private ginsen tub, and only in select rooms.
"Private" takes three shapes in Arima. Every-room in-suite baths: Shikinoirodori Hatago, Arimasansoh Goshobessho and Okuno Hosomichi. An exclusive-use bath house: Hashinoya Bekkan Ransui gives you a cypress-lined kinsen outdoor bath for private use. And select-room or reservable baths: Taketoritei Maruyama (private silver-spring tubs in select rooms) and Hotel Hanakoyado (two free reservable kinsen baths, plus in-room baths in its Premium Twin rooms). All six are flagged for private-bath access in our database.

The verified picks
At a glance
Hashinoya Bekkan Ransui is a nine-room Meiji-era villa that operates independently from its parent inn on Arima-cho. The stay is built around the garden bath house: a cypress-lined kinsen outdoor bath available for exclusive private use, so you soak in Arima's iron-salt water without sharing it. Kaiseki is served in your room rather than a dining hall, which completes the seclusion. Tattooed guests can use the private bath. Staff speak English. Rates start from about $460 per room including two meals.
At a glance
Arima Onsen Shikinoirodori Hatago reopened in March 2023 after a full renovation and is deliberately tiny: six rooms of 60 to 90 square metres, every one with its own private open-air kinsen bath, so there is no bathing rotation to navigate at all. Dining is a chef's-counter format where owner-chef Tadamichi Ota prepares the kaiseki in front of you. It has an English-language site and confirmed English service, and it is the most expensive pick here. Rates start from about $715 per night.
At a glance
Okuno Hosomichi (Arima Onsen Tenchi no Yado Oku no Hosomichi) is a 19-room ryokan where every room has its own open-air private bath, fed by two waters: the signature kinsen — Arima's iron-salt spring that turns amber on contact with air — and a softer second source the property describes as close to silver-spring character. That makes it the third every-room option in this guide alongside Hatago and Goshobessho. Staff speak English; the tattoo policy is not confirmed in our data, so ask before booking. Ratings across booking platforms cluster between 9.0 and 9.3. Rates start from about $217 per person including two meals.
At a glance
Hotel Hanakoyado is one of Arima's smallest inns — nine rooms in a Taisho-period building maintained by the Gosho-bo group alongside Tocen Goshobo. The free-flowing kinsen source sits directly behind the inn and feeds two private kashikiri baths, Kaedero and Tsutabasu, that guests book at no extra charge, 24 hours a day; Premium Twin rooms add an in-room private kinsen bath. Tattooed guests are welcome in the reservable private baths. At 9.4 from 55 reviews it is the value entry to a private kinsen soak. Rates start from about $197 per night.
At a glance
Taketoritei Maruyama is a 29-room hillside ryokan named after the Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, and the one pick here that gives you both of Arima's waters — kinsen and ginsen baths on the property, with select rooms featuring private open-air silver-spring tubs. If a private ginsen soak is the point of your trip, book one of those rooms specifically. Tattooed guests may use the private baths. Eight minutes from the station, 9.5 across 380+ reviews. Rates start from about $250 per night.
At a glance
Arimasansoh Goshobessho is built around a simple idea: ten detached villa suites, each with its own bath drawn directly from the kinsen source, so there is no communal bathhouse to compete for. It sits firmly in Arima's top tier, holds a 9.5 from reviewers, and has an English-speaking front desk. Together with Hatago it is the clearest "every room, no caveats" option in the town. Rates start from about $515 per villa per night.
Tip
Choose your water, then the room. Most private baths in this guide are kinsen, the iron-rich gold spring. If you want the clear ginsen (silver spring) instead, book a ginsen room at Taketoritei Maruyama specifically — it is the only pick here with private silver-spring tubs.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Which Arima ryokans have a private onsen in every room?+
Shikinoirodori Hatago (all six rooms have a private kinsen open-air bath), Arimasansoh Goshobessho (all ten villa suites have an in-suite kinsen bath) and Okuno Hosomichi (every one of its 19 rooms has its own open-air bath, fed by kinsen and a milder second source). Hashinoya Bekkan Ransui gives guests exclusive use of a cypress-lined kinsen bath house rather than an in-room tub; Taketoritei Maruyama has private silver-spring baths in select rooms only.
What is the difference between kinsen and ginsen?+
Kinsen ("gold spring") is Arima's iron-rich, salty water that turns amber when it meets the air; ginsen ("silver spring") is clear and carbonated. Most private baths in this guide are kinsen. Taketoritei Maruyama has both and is the pick if you specifically want a private ginsen soak.
Can I use a private bath in Arima with tattoos?+
At Hashinoya Bekkan Ransui and Taketoritei Maruyama our records show tattooed guests may use the private baths with communal facilities off-limits. Hotel Hanakoyado welcomes tattooed guests in its reservable private baths. For Hatago, Goshobessho and Okuno Hosomichi the policy is not confirmed in our data, so ask before booking.
How far is Arima from Kobe and Osaka?+
Arima is about 30 minutes from Kobe by rail or bus and roughly an hour from Osaka, which is why it works as an overnight from either city. Taketoritei Maruyama (8 minutes) lists a walking time from Arima Onsen Station; the other picks do not list minutes, so ask the property or plan a short taxi.
Is Arima better than Kinosaki for a private onsen?+
They are different trips: Arima is a compact hillside town half an hour from Kobe with unusual water and a strong villa-style luxury tier; Kinosaki is a canal town built around public bathhouse-hopping. If a private bath in your room is the priority, Arima's picks include three every-room options. We compare the two in detail in our Arima vs Kinosaki guide.
