Arima has been a bathing destination for around 1,400 years and sits 30 minutes from Kobe, which is both its appeal and its problem: the town is compact and the communal baths at the big inns are shared with everyone else who came for the same water. A private bath is the way to have that water to yourself — and Arima's water makes it worth it, because the amber kinsen and the clear ginsen are Arima's own.

Two waters, one town. Kinsen, the gold spring, is iron-rich and salty, and it turns amber-brown on contact with air; it is the water most of Arima's private baths use. Ginsen, the silver spring, is clear and carbonated. Only one pick in this guide — Taketoritei Maruyama — offers a private ginsen tub, and only in select rooms.

"Private" takes three shapes in Arima. Every-room in-suite baths: Shikinoirodori Hatago, Arimasansoh Goshobessho and Okuno Hosomichi. An exclusive-use bath house: Hashinoya Bekkan Ransui gives you a cypress-lined kinsen outdoor bath for private use. Hashinoya Bekkan Ransui is a nine-room Meiji-era villa that operates independently from its parent inn on Arima-cho. The stay is built around the garden bath house: a cypress-lined kinsen outdoor bath available for exclusive private use, so you soak in Arima's iron-salt water without sharing it. Kaiseki is served in your room rather than a dining hall, which completes the seclusion. Tattooed guests can use the private bath. Staff speak English. Arima Onsen Shikinoirodori Hatago reopened in March 2023 after a full renovation and is deliberately tiny: six rooms of 60 to 90 square metres, every one with its own private open-air kinsen bath, so there is no bathing rotation to navigate at all. Dining is a chef's-counter format where owner-chef Tadamichi Ota prepares the kaiseki in front of you. It has an English-language site and confirmed English service, and it is the most expensive pick here. Rates start from about $715 per night.

Okuno Hosomichi (Arima Onsen Tenchi no Yado Oku no Hosomichi) is a 19-room ryokan where every room has its own open-air private bath, fed by two waters: the signature kinsen — Arima's iron-salt spring that turns amber on contact with air — and a softer second source the property describes as close to silver-spring character. That makes it the third every-room option in this guide alongside Hatago and Goshobessho. Staff speak English; the tattoo policy is not confirmed in our data, so ask before booking. Hotel Hanakoyado is one of Arima's smallest inns — nine rooms in a Taisho-period building maintained by the Gosho-bo group alongside Tocen Goshobo. The free-flowing kinsen source sits directly behind the inn and feeds two private kashikiri baths, Kaedero and Tsutabasu, that guests book at no extra charge, 24 hours a day; Premium Twin rooms add an in-room private kinsen bath.
