Beppu produces more geothermal water than anywhere else in Japan, and among the six private-onsen picks in this guide four put a bath in every room. The catch is that Beppu is a city, not a village, and its hot-spring districts are spread out with very different water and character.

Beppu's private-bath ryokans cluster in two places. Along the Kamegawa coast the selling point is the bay: Amane Resort GAHAMA, Amane Resort Seikai and Chobonoyado Shiori all face Beppu Bay, and the first two give every room an oceanfront open-air bath. Up in the hills the selling point is the water and the seclusion — Sanso Kannawa-en's cobalt-blue spring in the steaming Kannawa district, Ryotei Matsubaya's alkaline Kankaiji source, and Beppu Showoen's cottages on a former gold-mine estate.

"Private onsen" here means one of two things. In-room baths belong to your room for the whole stay; GAHAMA, Seikai, Kannawa-en and Showoen give every room one, while Matsubaya puts them in one wing. Kashikiri baths are private baths you reserve in time slots, which is how Shiori works. Both count as private in listings, so read the room description, not just the headline.

Amane Resort GAHAMA is the newest of the Amane group's Beppu properties, opened in late 2024 on the Kamegawa coast with 17 rooms — every one facing the ocean with its own in-room open-air rotenburo on Beppu Bay. It shares Seikai's water source and orientation with newer fixtures and a far smaller scale. Every room has its own in-room rotenburo, and the property is recorded as tattoo-allowed. The only trade-off is a short review history. Rates start from about $260 per person per night.

Ryotei Matsubaya is the top-rated property in the hillside Kankaiji district, with 18 rooms across two wings and one of Beppu's most celebrated kaiseki kitchens — the premium menu is an omakase course built around Bungo beef, Oita sea bream and Seki mackerel. The in-room private onsen, fed by the Kankaiji alkaline spring, are in the Tsuki no Sou wing; the Oka no Sou wing is the more affordable entry. Four bath types are available across the property. Beppu Showoen is Beppu's answer to total seclusion: 11 detached guest cottages scattered across a 6,000-tsubo (roughly 20,000 m²) estate on the grounds of a former gold mine, each cottage with either a cypress indoor bath or a rock-built open-air bath fed by free-flowing spring water. Kaiseki is served in the privacy of each cottage. Established in 1926, it is the most expensive pick in this guide and the least like a hotel. English is limited; vegetarian meals are available. Sanso Kannawa-en occupies a hillside estate in the steaming Kannawa district and is a registered cultural property — a Noh stage and thatched tea rooms sit in its gardens. The reason to stay is the water: a rare cobalt-blue spring rich in metasilicic acid, with every guest room fitted with private indoor and outdoor baths on free-flowing hot spring. The teppanyaki restaurant serves Bungo wagyu, and a shuttle runs from JR Beppu Station by reservation. English is limited; vegetarian meals are available. Rates start from about $350 per night.

Ryokan Chobonoyado Shiori is the 15-room alternative on the same coast as the Amane resorts: 15 rooms on the south Kamegawa shore with full nakai service and kaiseki centered on Beppu Bay seafood. Here the private baths are kashikiri — reservable within the property, facing the bay and garden — rather than in every room. The kashikiri baths are listed as tattoo-friendly, with a note to confirm at booking. English is limited, so booking through a platform is the practical route.
