Yufuin does not feel like an onsen town in the Beppu sense — there are no steam-belching "hells", no sand baths, no bathhouse-hopping. It is a small town of galleries and cafés beneath the twin peaks of Mt Yufu, with morning mist rising off Lake Kinrin, and several of the ryokans in this guide are built that way: detached rooms, villas, gardens, and baths that belong to you rather than to the building. If a private onsen is the point of your trip, that format works in your favour.

Private baths here come with the architecture. Many Yufuin ryokans are built as hanare — detached or annexe rooms, often standalone cottages — and a cottage tends to come with its own bath. Oyado Den Rikyu, Sanso Warabino and Oyado Nihon no Ashitaba are entirely detached; Souan Kosumosu mixes a main building with six hanare. Souan Kosumosu's hanare baths are fed by a continuous-flow source, and Warabino draws each villa's bath from its own dedicated spring.
